With this being said, you will be killing two birds with one bullet, you will have fresh content and up to date, and alse you will create a different post from the ones you usually do.

 

Ask your friends and followers



There’s nothing better than writing something interesting for those who read you, and when you’re missing inspiration you see all that your friends  followers and fans will like to read on your blog. Take a peak on to what is being talked about on social networks, Twitter in this case can be a great ally. Create filters related to the theme/subject of your blog and organize all the information that you see that is alike, then give a personal touch and make a post of your own with updated content.

 

Escaping traditional formats


There’s a lot of kinds of contents that you can do. Escape from the traditional post in which you show text with many images and jump into another kind of content, like interviews, blog collaborations, recaps, info-graphics, etc. A good content is the one that is done with love and desire, and of course, asking the collaboration of other bloggers so they comment and/or answer your questions as to any topic (interviews), this could be something that could fascinate your readers. Asides from these kinds of content, you must link each one of the bloggers you will interview , it will help you to get organic back links.

 

Create Content, even when you don’t need it


We can make researches on specific data that we would like to bring into our blog. We just need to be creative, original and knowing how to filter information. For example, conduct a study on to which kind of data would help your users. Write your thoughts on this topics, and give them your personal idea about it, of course using some “literature“, give an opinion about this data and you may come up with wonderful conclusions. In the end, what matters most, are your conclusions and your own examples, never forget this, don’t forget this.

Do you thing that once you make a post, you must forget about it, Not at all! Check those posts that worked better for you , read the content and look if you could turn it around adding  something else to the old content. This simple gesture will help you reactivate those old rusty posts so they continue to drive traffic to your blog, and those who just needed some updates or text or images, so they continue to be useful and read.

 

Do something to inspire yourself


Live through my words, you’re sitting in front of your PC and you don’t know what to write about. Minutes go by, hours go by and you still have nothing, not even a word. (*cough* fixes her throat) Excuse me, Do you think that by being there all sittin’ in your chair staring at the monitor real closely you’ll get something? Get UP and DISCONNECT  go for a walk, listen to music, read a good book, go see a good movie.


Breathe some fresh air so you can unplug and enjoy of these new ideas to feed your creativity, it will make you break the routine and you will for sure be back on your computer with another mind set and wanting to create new content.

 

You will have plenty of options when it comes to great ideas to create a great content, the most important thing for you to know how to keep a good blog updated, is not always pure original content. Let’s try to find Organic SEO in Google, What do we find?

We find people that are searching for organic SEO, but also they want to know how to do it with tips and tricks, no true organic at all. As my grandmother would say ” we want our cake, and eat it too”, and that just can’t be.

SEO is about generating quality content that provokes interest, with a website that solves a problem or satisfies a need, oriented to the way the user is searching this information, concrete or indexable for search engines. That, my friend, is SEO.

If you’re looking for shortcuts to be first one on Google search, I can give you a clue: There’s None. Or let me correct myself, there’s very few of them, not very effective, they are brief, that are a blatant risk for your website and that usually take more work than doing it the proper way. And if you want to generate value, the content will be your best ally in this mission.

If you’re still focused on finding fast and easy methods that would work…or not, you’re one step away from searching “Black Hat SEO”, “Back Link exchange“, “Blog Networks”, “free articles and press releases” and stuff like that, because this post ISN’T about that, it’s about real techniques that would work this week, and the following, and so on, that will make you grow in a sustainable pace that will never EVER receive a penalization or ban.

1. Know your User:

 

The first thing you need to know is, Who is your audience? Each audience consumes information in a different way.

For example, this post could be called “Techniques on Content Marketing for SEO”, but it is directed to a more reduced audience and specialize, and the advises would be totally different. To know what is people searching you could use some help from Google auto-fill tool, Google Keyword Tool and Google Trends.

Of course, not all is provided by a tool. If you have a website about dogs, it will suggest you like content: Dog videos, Dog websites, Dog pictures, or even synonyms like, K-9, Canine, Wolf, or even give you interesting ideas. But maybe you have detected unimportant niches, such as “videos to cheer you up” or “Videos to see when you’re sad”. Your content solves problems and needs, search which ones are those, how many different ways could this idea be expressed, and create specific content on that.

In other words: Find out which needs you satisfy? How are these searched? Who is your competition? and become the brand everyone wants to see.

You can use the “Persona” technique, that would make it way easier to personalize the content for the different types of users that you could have.

2. Have a Plan:

The content must be planned. You must have a clear and numeric goal – Never exclusively SEO-, a specific audience and a load full of ideas and desire to try them all.

.If you don’t plan your content with an editorial calendar, varying formats, specifying which type of user this content is directed to and focusing your users on making a specific function when they visit your web (give you and email, phone, read more posts, follow you on twitter…) it will be hard to know if you’re doing it right or wrong and you will depend only of your intuition to move forward. 

3. Use your Blog:

 

Your blog is not just a great tool to create content that lures Google to your website on it’s own, creating posts with great ranking, but it also allows you to:

• Generate Links: if you generate an easy-to-share content, people will share it, links included, which will benefit your domain and at all it comes with it. Is not all about the post being good, it also helps that your blog is liable and with a good reputation.


• Build Relationships: It is as simple as linking someone else’s links into our web. Millions of people are generating a very valuable content on different subjects, and at least some of them have created a resource that complements your post perfectly: Link Them! Then, if you want to, mention them in twitter, so they know that you talk about them and they know about you.


• Reinforce your Brand: Take care of the aesthetic of your blog, that reinforces the identity of your company or brand, use the side bars, the header, the footer to accomplish your branding goals, and take care of aspects as the color palettes, images, that all elements have harmony with the whole content and brand.

 

4. Friends-from everywhere:

 

Let’s not fool ourselves, getting as many quality links is about relationships. Not only having a well informed group of friends and acquaintances in the online world -that also- but to know how to generate an impact in the person we talk to so they decide to link us, befriend them.


As always, let events, parties, breakfasts and any other excuse so you can meet these bloggers or people in your niche. It will allow you to put a face on the people online, build relationships, and this will lead you to everything else.

 

5. Dig deeper on Social Networks:

 

The organic SEO depends a great deal on the engagement that you get from social networks, first of all because it allows you to establish relationships, it is a ranking factor as is, confirms the link profile and it gives you visibility and branding. Be careful that you don’t get links without anyone knowing about you, and if your content doesn’t have a brand that is safe to link.

And don’t only stay in Twitter and Facebook: social networks such as SlideshareGoogle+Instagram, can be very useful, depends on which niches and brands, and tools like scoop.it or StumbleUpon can help you win a permanent traffic and links. Even blogs and forums on your niche, can be awesome tools, even if they require more investigation, they will get you the visibility for your targeted audience and would be fundamental in getting your first followers. Don’t forget about them.

 

6. Team Think Tank:

Do people like what you do? Try combining with what others do. Alloys are stronger!

It can be working in a static website with all the “influencers” from a blog niche in California, or a niche close to your subject. For example, if you talk about Social Media, why not collaborate with 5 of your friends to create a Tumblr with the mistakes of different brands on social media? or a WordPress with obviously  paid tweets?


It will give you visibility asides from your blog, website and RRSS, and it will allow you to leave the routing to experiment new things.

 

7. Save the Best content for Others:

 

If you’re going to make content, reward those who will give you more visibility.


If you search blogs and ways to participate sporadically -Guest Blogging- try to have a bigger reach than your platform, or that it reached a niche that you wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise. After, reserve the best content for them. If in your blog you can reach 1,000 people and on the other one you can reach 10,000, try harder in the one that will give you more visibility.

 

8. Respect Branding as an SEO Tool:

 

Branding is fundamental in SEO. If nobody knows you, no one will search your brand, remember that SEO traffic keywords with your brand name is also organic SEO. Having a strong brand won’t only make people search you more, but it will turn you into a liable source and will increase the click rate of your results and the possibilities of being shared and linked, meaning, SEO benefit everywhere.

 

9. Video, Video, Video:

The visual content is the most consumed on internet, and video is King. It is the same if you use Instagram Video or if you upload them in YouTube, you must constantly prove that these formats boost your visibility.


First of all, because videos have an easy time when positioning themselves in very competitive searches, and because the video reinforces the textual content like a post and generate more branding, authority and confidence.

10. Change the Format:

There’s no one and only winner format. Each kind of target usually have one or two preferred formats, but still one single Persona can consume content in different ways. For example, on weekends you watch some videos on Youtube with your friends, on the way to work you read an e-book, while at work you read interesting articles for your kind of job, you get home and go on Facebook ( Eminently visual ) and Twitter ( Eminently textual) and right before bedtime you laugh a little bit on InstagramPinterest and Vine, and if you use so many formats, your audience too!

 

Work on different formats of content, and try which ones work better with your audience: Is it posting a comic every once in a while? Is it videos? Is it shocking images? Or is it better text, so you focus on posts, whitepapers, e-books and researches? Varying the formats will allow you to reach new audiences, create loyalty with those who already read you and consolidate your content strategy by discovering what works and what doesn’t, and your organic ranking will boost and grow as soon as you find the “It” factor.

 

11. Let Users Help You:

 


The users are the best way to generate content without doing it yourself directly: You just have to manage it, and it requires time and dedication, but it brings impressive results.


• Comments: Blog comments and, overall, in products, add priceless SEO value when you add semantic related content.


• Blogs: If you have loyal users willing to talk about a certain subject, Why don’t you let them create their own blogs? This will be generating an indexable content for search engines and capturing a Long Tail traffic as well as gaining loyalty.


• Forum: For websites with a big community this forum can be a winner strategy. Websites like these rank awesomely in a wide range of keywords and topics at the same time, in a very active community that is is constantly planning doubts, offering solutions and generating matters of discussion, you can be sure this will help you in a great deal.


• Q & A’s: If you don’t want to manage a forum but you still want to allow community activity, you can accept questions and you would answer them, as long as you are a source of authority about the topic. In the end an important percentage of Google searches are questions.


• Ambassadors: If you have users that are really IN LOVE with you, participate in everything you do and are absolutely faithful, find ways to reward them and allow them to do their job as living proof of what loyalty to your brand feels like, this will get you more followers. From sending them content before anyone else sees it (Premiere content) so they make them viral, to giving them products or mentioning them on RRSS.

 

12. Create Your Own Images:

 


If you can, use your own images and use a Creative Commons licence so they are usable under accreditation. Seriously, it’s impossible to find good images about certain topics, and ranking number 1 on Google images for a specific post concept, can mean that there’s many bloggers linking you, crediting your work, as the best one they found to illustrate their content.

 

13. Think about the Domain:

 

Make yourself thing in a holistic way: organic SEO is no longer on one page, but the entire domain. If you create a post about, i don’t know, Unicorns in a blog for Death Metal, it would be a lot more difficult that it ranks properly rather than the same content in a child’s blog, no matter how good the content is even if the website has good metrics.


This doesn’t mean that you have to talk about one subject, but it’s good for you to be aware which are your weaknesses and your strengths.

 

14. Work your Personal Brand:


Even if you invest in your blog brand, your own brand is also important. Invest in yourself, because maybe tomorrow your blog changes, your work changes or even you’re in another kind of industry and you’re intersected by other topics, so you need the reputation of this blog converges on you.


Giving yourself visibility in your posts, turning your readers into Twitter followers, subscribers, or using your reputation to increase your contact network are the best ways to become a brand yourself, and make more relevant any future initiative. 

 

15. Find a Good Balance between Quality and Quantity:


Everybody will tell you quality over quantity, and they’re right, but in many occasions the content of great quality won’t generate enough impact, and for it you’d need to dedicate too much time on it.


If you still don’t have contacts, SEO traffic or Links, is convenient that you focus on fast and easy to do content, never mediocre, but don’t pretend to make a Mona Lisa in every post, because no one will read you. If you focus in a long tail keyword, generate relationships, as for a few links here and there, and exchange some exceptional posts when guest blogging, in a few months you could have a greater capacity, and you must follow the higher quality posts even if this means slowing down the quantity.


Finding the balance is, for most of it, what sets appart a good blogger from the rest.

 

Bonus Tip: Don’t think too much:

 

Seriously, if someone has made you think that SEO is complex and inaccessible, forget about them. A website with no kind of SEO optimization can get an excellent natural ranking as long as they have good strategy, offer a unique and relevant content and that considers of high importance relationships and branding.

Mistakes are human, on the SEO field, getting confused over and over again is the only way hit number one position on web rankings, which is the reason why we are used to this kind of M.O. more than any other online marketing field, to deal with useless tactics or a wrong approach until we press the right button. Is hard to learn from other’s experiences, since we didn’t live them, but here’s a list of things you’d like to know to save you some time and a few headaches with your SEO company or your Page Ranking agency.

SEO is changing, and this trend is causing that many agencies whom, before now, boasted performance are constantly being attacked by Penguins and Pandas for not having been able to adapt to the times.

 

It is clear that older tactics don’t work anymore, and because of that it is more important than ever to validate your agency or SEO professional’s capacity to ensure you that they know what they’re talking about, and even more important, that they won’t cause you any permanent penalty or ban to your website.

 

A little clarification here

 

It is very possible that in any other area of your SEO campaign may not be giving you the results you were expecting. Aside from the typical online marketing variables, we find a Google factor, a mutable algorithm that changes at least once a day. Also the SEO usually depends on interdepartmental coordination (Social Media, IT, content …), that in many cases is not fast or it is not directly related, what could be the answer to some of your goals are not reached as expected.

Too Many Links, Too Fast

 

Every good website needs its prelims, just like asking out a girl or a conversation with your boss about a raise.

 

If the month the agency you work with tells you they’ve created 100 back links, do not trust. In fact, distrust a LOT. It wouldn’t be the first account that i see that all of the sudden has 50 articles with an obvious spinning in every article farm from here to China. Ask for details and go over them manually. Some tools like Ahrefs that give you the option to see a 2 months history of your link profile growth, so you can see if your growth is coherent or not.

Same way, if the strategy is built to increase authority of your website goes over hundreds of low quality links before some high quality ones, keep asking questions. You could be in front of a clear scam indicator or faulty criteria.

The previous SEO used to be a little pirate. Let me explain myself here, if 1 out of 3 words from the text have to be cheap catchy phrases to be top ranking for Google, we do it and the user, well.. let them survive as they can.

It is clear that there’s a lot of horrible websites, that makes you feel sad when you see them and some even take you back to 1999, to the Frontpage times, keyword stuffing and SEO’s with avatar pictures of Matrix (Flashbacks everywhere!)

 

Luckily we’re leaving that era behind, the hard way and a slower pace than we would like to, but it’s being left behind for good.

Do you know how many labels or tags does your blog has?

It seems like a stupid question, but most bloggers wouldn’t know how to give you an estimate answer, nor telling the differences between, labels and categories to a conceptual level, and maybe not even the advantages of labels or tags, and the need of planning these before starting to blog.

So, Why are Tags/Labels important?

The labels serve two purposes: SEO, since they allow to attract more traffic, and User Experience, since it allows the user to navigate easier on your blog. 

About SEO, it allows to match up information about a topic. There are two very important factors that make Google like labels or tags.

If you’re writing about a specific subject every few days and you tag it, when Google crawls the website for this label sees numerous fresh content, which is a sign that you’re taking care of your website. Besides, if you have lots of content on one subject, it is more likely that Google knows that you talk about the subject, or even that you’re an expert in the matter, and decides to give you a bigger relevance.

For example, if we’re talking about WordPress all day, and we use this label, and we achieve having hundreds of quality posts and original content, Google will value the website for this label. And even knows that every time it index your page, it has loads of new content and coherent, which Google is looking for, it will fall in love with the website and it’s labels and you will drive a lot more traffic.

With the previous example, each time Google goes into an WordPress post, it will follow the link of the label and will index again the website and all previous posted articles about the subject. This makes you constantly remind Google that the website exists, and the content inside , and your continuous updates.

Even better, since all the content is related, you generate a link network of content about the same topic in which all posts have already a value (through the link) to that website which wraps all up. The website label is at the center of this network of links.

For these reasons, some websites use a label cloud in the home page. To make it easier for Google to index the most frequently used labels from the home page, without having to going into any post. Regarding the user experience, it is important that the user can access all topics talked about in an article after reading the post. If the reader has read a post about Blogger labels and loved it, he should be able to access more posts about Blogger labels and more posts on Blogger simply by clicking a label.

To make sure that it works, we must try to visually highlight the labels whenever possible, making sure you don’t over load the post with them. There’s not a perfect label amount, depends on the blog, the niche and the blogger, the best guide is common sense.

If labels are so wonderful, why don’t you marry them?

Even if labels have so many advantages, they also have some dangers if not used properly, especially if you have a blog with several editors. These are some of them:

Imagine that we’re talking about blogs, so you decide to cover all your corners using the labels, blogs, blogging, blogger, and any synonym that comes to your head. Moreover, you use them in each post that talks about the subject. By doing this you have created four pages with exactly the same content, Duplicate Content, and Google thinks that duplicate content is “Not Cool”. Even worst, since you have used very similar terms if they get some positioning they will fight with each other and will “cannibalize” each other, competing for links and social attention.

 

This goes without saying much, that the user will be lost into which option should he click, and may not understand it’s duplicity.

Without any clear policy on tags or labels, many times you end up having thousands of tags with one or no posts. In worst-case-scenario you’d have more tags than posts, and most of them with duplicate content, which will, not only decrease the potential of those pages to position but, indicate bad quality content for Google.

 

How should I handle it, then?

To manage a blog the ideal would be to start from a very clear idea on which topics will be presented in your blog. You can divide it in a bunch of different principal topics, less concrete and with more potential of search engine positioning, these will be the categories.

 

The categories are in every website, and their roll is similar to the tags, but with a step ahead: always visible, more important for navigation, more updated. Keep them for content that you will be talking about frequently without being too specific.

 

After that , brake those categories into more complex topics. For example, if we’re going to talk a lot about Blogger, we could consider it a Category, and establish the tags for Blogger tricks, Blogger Themes, Blogger widgets, and we could spend the rest of the day breaking these down.

 

When in doubt between various words, make an analysis of key words and choose the one that fits better to your SEO strategy or the one that the user would understand better.

 

The best option is to have a list of tags and come back to this list in case of any doubts. If you have a group of writers a Google Docs would make wonders, trust me!

 

Again, there’s no perfect number. In some blogs the topics are limited, less than 100 tags/labels is a perfect number, while for other blogs less than 600 could be impossible. A good example of a blog that manages perfectly the amount and variety of content with very few tags is Smashing Magazine ,  while with a great amount of tags would be a great fit for a movie or recipe/Cooking blog.

 

I have already messed it up, now what?

If you already have a blog and you’ve made the mistakes we just told you not to, you still have hope, follow these 3 easy steps:

 

Analyze the labels/tags traffic

Study carefully the ones who have not brought any traffic since the beginning and put them on the “delete” list. Besides, pay close attention to the ones who don’t bring any more traffic, and if they have at some point, try to see if there’s anything you could change to fix that; Has it been a long time without updating the? Have you used them improperly? Was it substituted by another tag? Using theses answers you will decide if the label lives or dies.

 

By the way, take the ones who drive more traffic and have them in the VIP list, so don’t even think about touching those if it isn’t to put them in an altar :).

Check which tags have 0 posts, you could be amazed. Mark a minimum of posts to make a label viable, and add those into the black list. Check before non of them are driving important traffic by any means.

If after doing this you see that there’s still some duplicate labels, but haven’t ended up in the black list, decide what to do. I always rather have a coherent blog and decide for one of both.

 

Once you’ve closed the black label list, decide where you will redirect. Some can be added to the categories that you keep, others will need new categories for the ones you will delete (for this you will make a little research on keywords) and others would be hard to rearrange because they can’t be grouped or are topics that you don’t talk about a lot. You can redirect these to your home.

 

Once you decide the substitute labels/pages, apply a 301 redirection that passes the current authority to the new ones.

 

After this long hard work, keep all the key words written, and from that day on make it your bible. If at any given moment your tags become a headache again, you just have to re-read your list and remember how to manage them and you should have no problems.

What can you do to get organic back links?

 

1. Offer good content:

 With a good content you have part of the work already done. If your content is good, you will soon have more and more users following you, comment your posts, and the word to mouth will do the rest. Little by little you will be linking from other blogs as a reference for your quality content.

 

2. Create Relationships:

Talk with other bloggers about your subject, establish relationships with them, and comment in their blogs. Besides giving us popularity among other bloggers and their followers, will help us create direct relationship with each and every single one of them.

 

3. Be yourself in social media and offer interesting content:

 Comment in similar blogs, and get to know them well. If your comment is worth it, as soon as you start establishing a friendship with them, they will also comment on your website/blog, and over the most important thing, the will share your content among their followers. That, of course, if you do it using “Common Sense” (Here we go again!), blowing your own whistle doesn’t work, comment to add value, not just to post your links.

 

4. Anytime you feel inspired while writing, mention it!

•  Now is time to make a list with keywords for which we want to position, are you positioned as you really want? No?  Use your social networks to give a little push to those keywords you want to be on top off. This as always without taking exceeding, use every once in a while these keywords in your social network updates and when you find convenient publish something with a link to your web.

A quick advise: Asides from social networks and Geo targeting, it is really hard to know exactly what is our ranking in search engines, the best way to know it is accessing Google’s Webmaster Tools > Traffic > Search Queries, where Google will give you a list of keywords and an average position in which you are ranknng.

 So there’s basically no choice in this one, I’d definitely bet on the latest technology in order to be up to date with the market out there.
